Delivery of convergent telecom services on J2EE platforms
Abstract.
The convergence of telecommunication and information technologies is now under way. Telecom engineers now develop services where access to business information and information processing are central. At the same time, software engineers develop distributed applications where networking and mobility are main issues. Telecom and software engineers traditionally use fundamentally different approaches for the development of services and applications. A main question is whether these differences are due to culture and tradition alone or there are more fundamental underlying issues as well? If there are fundamental issues, how can they be dealt with? In this paper, we first identify some fundamental issues, and then discuss how they impact service platforms. We then present one experimental service platform for delivery of convergent services and report on some experiences gained from using it.
