Key qualifications

Rolv Bræk is an electrical engineer, graduated from NTNU (at that time NTH), majoring in telecommunication switching systems in 1969. After graduating he spent three years as research assistant and assistant professor at NTNU, teaching and researching mainly on general digital system theory, computer systems, SPC (stored program controlled) switching systems and real time software. Following this he joined SINTEF where he worked until joining NTNU again as a full professor in 2000.  He headed the Teletraffic Group of ELAB (Electronics Research Laboratory of SINTF) in three years (1976-1979), and was Acting Director of research for the Telematics Section of ELAB 1987-1989. Has been adjunct professor (part time position) in systems development at NTH from 1988 to 1993 and from 1996 to 2000 with responsibility for teaching formal definition techniques (SDL, LOTOS, CCS), methodology and real time software design.

He has ten years experience as project manager and technical responsible for the development of computer systems and real time software for the telecommunication industry. These systems include ACD, CAMEX, TRIDEX and Garex-14 developed for G.A. Ring AS, and MAREIK developed for Elektrisk Bureau AS. The work included specification, design and implementation of fault tolerant and distributed computer systems including the operating systems and application software. All of these turned out to be long living industrial products.

He started early doing research into formal languages and methods for software and systems engineering. He developed the SDL Oriented Methodology, SOM, for specification and design of event driven real-time systems and applied the methodology on several commercial products. He initiated and headed the work on a computerized tool set for SOM called DASOM and work on an automatic program generation for SDL called ProgGen which were used industrially by Alcatel, Stentofon and others. He has participated in the SDL standardization work within CCITT.

He has extensive experience from teaching, consulting and introducing systems engineering methodologies to industry and has played a central role in the national technology transfer program SISU and its follow up SISU II where a number of companies collaborated to improve their systems engineering practices. He was responsible for the methodology work within SISU and co-authored a textbook on methodology using SDL (published by Prentice Hall), and a CD based textbook on The Integrated Methodology, TIMe.

He has worked extensively with Ericsson on introduction of SDL and TIMe into their product development. He participated in a study that proposed a new way to handle supplementary subscriber services in AXE-10, and has worked with call control and service execution frameworks for IP based communication systems (h.323), and as recently worked on service architectures, service execution frameworks and service platforms for convergent services.

He has participated in the RACE-SPECS project working on automatic code generation from SDL, and in the ESPRIT-PROTEUS project working on configuration issues in SDL systems. He headed a work package in the IST-CANDLE project on (re)engineering reusable e-learning material. He has spent 2 weeks as visiting researcher at the University of Essex in UK, and 3 months at RMIT in Melbourne Australia. He has been member of the program committee for the SDL Forum conferences, the international workshop on Feature Interactions (FIW), the SDL and MSC workshop (SAM) and the Eunice Summer School. He was member of the organizing committee for the 7th SDL Forum in Oslo, and acted as co-editor of the proceedings which were published by Elsevier Science. He was also member of the organizing committee for the IFIP WG6.7 Workshop and EUNICE Summer School on Adaptable Networks and Teleservices in 2002.

He has spent 2 weeks as visiting researcher at the University of Essex in UK, and 3 months at RMIT in Melbourne Australia. During the second half of 2004 he was a visiting professor at the School of Information Technology and Engineering at the University of Ottawa, Canada.

Research Interests

Currently his main research interest is methods, tools and platform support for rapid and incremental service development. He is one of the initiators of PATS (Program for Advanced Tele Services), which is a network of excellence between Telenor, Ericsson, Compaq and NTNU. Within this program, the Avantel and Arts projects, both funded by NFR, has built a joint research and student laboratory shared between NTNU, Telenor and Ericsson. He is currently supervising 6 Ph.D students in this area.
