Research Initiatives and Centres

Flume tank

IVT UTILIZES ITS MANY LABORATORIES and workshop facilities to combine theoretical and experimental research. These facilities are also utilized by many of the faculty's research partners, national and international. A particularly important partner is SINTEF, the largest independent research organization in Scandinavia.

Centre for Ships and Ocean Structures

FOCUSES ON THE ACQUISITION of basic knowledge concerning the behaviour of ocean structures. It integrates theoretcal and experimental research in hydrodynamics, structural technology and automatic control. The centre's supports innovations in the design and operation of the vessels, for platforms, and fish-farming structures of tomorrow.

International Centre for Geohazards

A CENTRE OF EXPERTISE promoting basic and applied research on geo-related natural hazards (geohazards), such as slides, earthquakes and tsunamis. The Centre attaches considerable importance to training students and researchers from Norway and abroad, and there seems to be no shortage of eager. [ ICG website ]

Strategic Focus Areas at IVT

MATERIALS: "Materials - basis of all new technology" - Norway is one of the world's largest exporters of many vital materials. An example is that 25 % of the silicon for PCs all over the world is from Norway. Over the years, Materials science at NTNU has developed strong research groups covering a wide variety of disciplines, from geomaterials to semiconductors.

ENERGY AND PETROLEUM - RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT: "Technology for a cleaner future" - NTNU is engaged in improving knowledge about sustainable production and the consumption of energy. Knowledge about new sources of renewable energy and energy carriers is particularly important. [ Activities and Programmes ]

MARINE and MARITIME TECHNOLOGY: The strategic area seeks to strenghen the knowledge required to maintain competetive and sustainable marine and maritime industries. During the last 30 years, aquaculture and the offshore development of petroleum resources have been added as significant activities at NTNU. Almost 250 man-years are devoted to such research at this university. [ Activities and Programmes ]

Marie Curie Training Sites at IVT

MARIE CURIE TRAINING SITES (MCTS), support young researchers pursuing doctoral studies in EU Member states, providing them the possibility of undertaking part of their doctoral studies in Norway, and allowing them the benefit of working with internationally recognised groups in their specialised areas of research. The MCTSs are supported by the European Commission's Fifth Framework Programme.
