Master of Science in Hydropower Development

Undervisning på engelsk.

Objective

Hydropower development is a typical interdisciplinary task. The person responsible for organising the activities and co-ordinating the work of all specialists involved is often a civil engineer who must have knowledge of a wide range of fields rather than being a specialist.

The main objective of the programme is to offer continuing education for future project managers in hydropower development and planners in the hydropower sector.

A wide range of engineering, economic and environmental subjects is covered. Both fundamental and applied subjects are included, with emphasis on the latter.

The program is designed for young professional engineers engaged in planning and implementation of hydropower and/or water resources projects. The lecturers are university staff and professional engineers with significant international experience.

The programme is consistent in referring to international practice and experience, not only the Norwegian experience in hydropower planning and development.

(*Compulsory courses = C, Elective/Supplementary courses = E/S, Individual courses/Research seminar = I/R, Fieldwork = F, Other = O, BC = basic course, AC = advanced course)

TVM 5105: Basic hydrology, applied hydrology and computational hydrology in the context of hydropower development.

TVM 5115: Planning and design of dams in the context of hydropower development. The course covers the basic in dam engineering for civil engineers, including concrete and embankment dams, soil mechanics for dams and concrete technology for dams.

TVM 5125: The course covers the basics in fluid mechanics, hydraulic design of dams and spillways, scour protection, fluvial sediment transport, turbines and surge tanks, hydraulic steel works and power house design.

TVM 5130: The students are carrying out a pre-feasibility study on hydropower development of a river basin in groups of 3-5 students.

TVM 5135: Organisation and management of hydropower studies, implementation of hydropower and water resources projects, tender and contracts, construction management and small scale hydropower development.

TGB5110: Basic engineering geology, rock mechanics, rock blasting and tunnelling for underground hydropower projects.

TVM 5140: Economic design criteria, investment and socio-economic analysis, environmental impact assessment studies and measures for mitigation of unfavourable environmental impacts.

TGB 5100: Extended applied knowledge in rock engineering fields like tunnels, underground caverns, rock slope stability etc. through lectures, workshops, field- and laboratory studies.

TVM 5150: Give extended knowledge on computer/numerical model applications in river system studies through lectures, workshops, computer model applications and exercises.

TVM 5160: Give extended knowledge of sédiment transport theory, use of water resources in sediment loaded rivers, reservoir sedimentation, headworks for run-of-river hydropower plants, sediment handling techniques, sediment sampling programmes and analysis of sediment data through lectures, asignments and laboratory studies.

TVM 5170 : Improve the knowledge of the different stages of the process of socio-economic assessment, including strategic priorities and national guidelines, and to improve tools for planning projects in the best possible way on a national, regional and local level.

Credits, thesis and examination

·The candidate must have accumulated 120 credits in order to obtain the MSc.

·The students have to pass the first year examinations to continue to second year of studies.

Exams

·1st year: Written exams: TVM 5105, 5115, 5125, 5140, TGB5110. Oral exam: TVM 5135.

·2nd year: Oral exams: TVM 5150, TVM 5160, TVM 5170. Written exam: TGB5100

·Project report: TVM 5130 and TVM4920 Master Thesis work.

Thesis

All theses are linked to projects or problems relevant to the student’s home country. The thesis is carried out on an individual basis. The topic is chosen at the end of first year study in agreement with the professor in charge. Most students go to their home country during the summer months between first and second year to collect data. The evaluation of the candidate’s performance on thesis level is based on a public presentation of the thesis and the thesis itself.

Duration

Four-semesters over 2 years. Starting mid August – ending mid June 2 years after.

For foreigners: go to: http://www.ntnu.no/intersek

For Norwegian Bachelor of Engineering (Regional Høyskolekandidat) 3 years civil/or equivalent studies is required.

Number of students

Number of students in total is about 15 – (max 20) and there is intake every year.

Course management

Professor-in-charge, Dr.ing. Haakon Støle and Course Co-ordinator Hilbjørg Sandvik

Research and study support

Exercises related to lectures are carried out with guidance from teaching supervisors. An experienced hydropower planner supervises the pre-feasibility assignment. Individual supervisors, coming from the university, or power companies, industry or consulting companies will be available for the M.Sc. thesis.

Personal support

The course co-ordinator will be in daily contact with the master students. There are two social consultants at NTNU, who are in frequent contact and available to the international students when needed.

Supervision

The professor in-charge of the course and the course co-ordinator arrange for study supervision as needed. The lecturers, PhD fellows and senior students are supervising assignment work etc.

IT-support

Four PC-labs with 25 computers are available for the students. The university is also providing access to the Internet from the student hostels.

Reading room facilities

The first year students will have a separate classroom always available to them. The second year students will have access to an individual study desk each when not attending class. In addition all NTNU-facilities are available.

Excursions

In the beginning of the first year a 3 days excursion to several types of hydropower plants are arranged. In the spring term of the second year an excursion to the Oslo area is arranged to meet authorities, research institutions and various companies in the hydropower sector. Severalone-day excursions/field work are arranged during the studies.
