Instructions for Exam Candidates

at Bodø University College (BUC)

Passed by the Board for Quality Assurance of Bodø University College, September 16th 2004, pursuant to the provision of ”Act of May 12th 1995 no. 22 relating to Universities and University Colleges” and “Exam Regulations for Bodø University College”, passed by the Executive Board of Bodø University College, June 15th 2004

SUPERVISED INDIVIDUAL WRITTEN EXAM (“School Exam”)

Candidates sit for the exam at a location decided by BUC. Information about the time and place is found in the exam schedule in the Student service area, the “Arena” system and in listings on campus.

1. Candidates must be present in the exam room at least 15 minutes before the exam starts. Writing paper is handed out when the candidates are seated. The only things candidates may bring to their seat are writing materials, allowed remedies and food and beverages. Use of cellular phones is not allowed in the exam room or at any time during the exam. Cellular phones must be switched off and stored in bag, rucksack, outdoor clothes or other personal outfit that must be placed in front of the room before the exam starts. After having received the examination paper, the candidate cannot leave the exam room until he/she has signed the candidates’ list, and for no reason earlier than 30 minutes after the exam started.

2. Candidates who arrive too late for an exam must contact the Exam Office, preferably through an invigilator on the exam premises, to ask permission to sit the exam. Permission may be granted or denied by Exam office. If the candidate is allowed, no extra time will be granted.

3. The candidates must show a valid student card or other valid ID with a photo, and sign on the candidates’ list when the invigilators ask for it. External candidates must show a valid receipt for having paid the fee. Candidates who cannot show a valid ID or a valid receipt for paid semester fee can be dismissed from the exam.

4. Bodø University College normally uses carbonised answering sheets for exams (1 original + 2 copies). Notice that the answers must be written with a ballpoint pen or a hard felt-tip pen to ensure that the copies are readable. The candidates get 15 minutes additional time for filling in headings and sorting the sheets. The original set and the first copy set is to be stapled and handed in, while the candidate can keep the second copy set. If a candidate has run out of time and hands in pages of rough paper, he/she cannot expect those to be copied and passed on to the examiners/ moderator.

5. All information in the heading of the answering sheets must be properly filled in. It is forbidden to start writing anything on the sheets before the question papers have been handed out. Candidates who want to hand in a blank answering sheet must fill in all information in the heading before handing in one original and one copy sheet.

6. The candidate must bring his/her own writing materials and allowed remedies for the exam. The candidate is held responsible that his/her materials and remedies do not contain any illegal notes. It is strictly forbidden to be in possession of or to utilize any other readings than allowed remedies for the exam. Borrowing allowed remedies from another candidate during exam should be avoided - the invigilator will decide in each case whether it can be allowed or not. Notice that possession as well as use of illegal remedies after the exam has started is considered cheating.

7. During the exam all contact between candidates is strictly forbidden. No one can leave his/her seat without permission from an exam invigilator. Questions during exam must be directed to invigilators only, and the candidates must follow their instructions.

8. Candidates are not allowed to sit in the college canteen during the exam, but they may buy food and beverages there. It is not allowed to go elsewhere, nor is it allowed to use a telephone during exam. Breaks should be made as short as possible considering that many fellow candidates also want a break.

9. On handing in the answering sheets, the candidate must stay in his/her seat waiting until all sheets have been checked by the invigilator, and then leave the exam room immediately.

10. When a PC is an allowed remedy, the officer in charge of the exam is entitled to check that only necessary software is installed on the hard disk and on available storage media (diskette, USB, CD and other).

11. When the candidate has been allowed the use of a PC, he/she will get an empty electronic storage device for answering.

12. Bodo University College does not hold responsibility for loss of text/data caused by power outage or hardware failure during exam. The candidate must make sure to frequently backup of his work.

13. Unless otherwise informed, when a PC is used for exam the candidate is supposed to hand in a printout of the answering sheets. The candidate is responsible that all material handed in as part of the exam answer (e.g. paper printouts, data applications, etc. on adequate storage media) is adequately marked with his/her candidate number.

UNSUPERVISED WRITTEN EXAM / PROJECT TASK (“Home Exam”)

This can be a written individual exam, a group exam, or a project task lasting one or more days, and it is the basis for a mark. Information about the start time and deadline is found in the exam schedule in the Student service area, the “Arena” system and in listings on campus. All remedies are allowed, and candidates are required to enter detailed specifications (in their answering sheets) of all sources utilized.

  1. The answering sheets shall be handed in to Exam Office within the given deadline. Candidates who live more than 100 kilometres from campus may send their exam script/answering sheets by mail, as registered mail or valuables. In such cases the candidates must make sure they get a receipt from the post office proving that it was sent before the deadline (postmark with date and time on the receipt). The receipt must be kept for documentation purposes. In special cases other arrangements for handing in answers can be made with the Exam Office.  Agreements about such arrangements must be made before the exam enrolment deadline.
  2. Three copies of the exam script/answering sheets must be handed in or sent to the Exam Office. The candidate should also make sure to have a copy of his/her own. The subject code, title and individual candidate number (allocated to all candidates when the examination papers are given out) must be entered on the exam script/answering sheets. Please notice that the candidate’s name should not be entered.
  3. For all unsupervised written exams / project tasks it is an absolute requirement - unless otherwise specified in the examination paper - to state in detail all sources utilized (Internet, periodicals, books, other printed sources, personal sources, etc). If direct transcript is used, you must mark the sentences concerned with, for example, paragraph indentation, italic script or a similar way, and you must also reveal your sources and page references. Disregard of this provision may be treated as cheating or an attempt to cheat.
  4. Bodø University College will check all of the handwritten works to prevent plagiarism from the Internet, newspapers, articles, and previously handed student works. Plagiarism is seen as cheating, and will in the worst cases lead to loss of the right to study at BUC, other Norwegian education institutions, and BUC’s international partners.
