Trust in the Lord, and do good;
so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37vv3-4

I am a førsteamanuensis at the Department of Mathematics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, otherwise known as NTNU.
This website is divided into the following sections:

  • Research. Details of my research and of my papers and preprints.
  • Seminars. Details of those seminars that I have given where I have produced notes in a reasonable enough state for others to read.
  • Professional. Information regarding my professional status such as my CV, a detailed research plan, and information about my teaching experience.
  • Teaching. Information about my current teaching duties.
  • HowDidIDoThat. Hints, Hacks, and Howtos for making computers work how I want them to and not the other way around.
  • Links. Various links that I either use frequently or consider to be important.
  • Fjord. Some pictures of the fjord from my office window.

Fjorden i Dag

These are pictures of the fjord taken from my office window. As well as being a fantastic view it also varies considerably from day to day. The weather changes quite quickly in Trondheim and the predominant direction is from the fjord. So one can often see what weather is coming.

To misquote John Baez, I don't take a new picture every day, but when I do, it is always i dag.

Actually, it's usually i kveld as I'm currently taking these pictures using a camera phone and my work machine won't talk to my phone as it's too posh (it will only talk to devices with the right connections) so I have to process the pictures at home before uploading them. That also explains why they aren't great quality.

The Hunting of the Hopf Ring (PDF or PS)

Joint with Sarah Whitehouse

We provide a new algebraic description of the structure on the set of all unstable cohomology operations for a suitable generalised cohomology theory, E*. Our description is as a graded and completed version of a Tall-Wraith monoid. The E*-cohomology of a space X is a module for this Tall-Wraith monoid. We also show that the corresponding Hopf ring of unstable co-operations is a module for the Tall-Wraith monoid of unstable operations. Further examples are provided by considering operations from one theory to another.

Variations on a Theme: Riemannian Geometry in Infinite Dimensions

Algebraic Topology Special Session, BMC 2007

Infinite dimensional Riemannian manifolds have traditionally been divided into two types: strong and weak. One can generalise many of the standard constructions of Riemannian geometry to strong Riemannian manifolds but not to weak ones. In this talk I shall examine some of the basic results of Riemannian geometry in order to refine this classification. The purpose is to show that some constructions can be generalised to certain weak Riemannian manifolds. I shall conclude by describing which level of structure is available for the free loop space of a finite dimensional manifold and by explaining how this can be used in applications.

Galeon Tab Position

The gconf-editor provides more configuration options than are otherwise apparent, in particular the option for the position of the tab bar (located under UI).
