AMEC - Arctic Military Environmental Cooperation
AMEC - Arctic Military Environmental Cooperation - is a cooperation between Norway, Great Britain, USA and Russia. In AMEC, these countries are working together in order to solve defence-related environmental problems in the Arctic areas.
Both radiological and non-radiological issues are being adressed. As a result, AMEC is creating a safer and more secure environment in the region. Confidence and contact between military institutions in the three countries also improve.
AMEC is managed by the Ministries of Defence in Russia, Great Britain, USA and Norway. Eight AMEC projects have been established, and more are planned. In Norway, FFI has the day-to-day responsibility and leadership for the projects addressing radiological issues. The Norwegian "Project Officers" heading the radiological projects are all FFI scientists, with background in physics or chemistry.
FFI scientists currently work on AMEC projects dealing with:
One radiological project is completed: Handling of spent naval nuclear fuel - development of a storage container.
In addition to the FFI projects, there are several non-radiological AMEC projects which are carried out by other defence institutions than FFI.
