Distributed Computing for Computational Neuroanatomy and Neuroinformatics This project has developed a new application for advanced visualisation and analyses of neuronal structures and structure - function relationships in the brain. The application, m3d, utilizes principles of distributed computing and includes both standard and novel approaches for 3-D visualization and analyses of data from brain tissue sections. The main new achievement is a method for surface modelling of complex brain structures and distribution patterns, using scalar field methodology and implicit representations of geometries. In addition, the project has implemented a web client based on Java3D with full 3-D viewing capability, interactive manipulation and live communication with parallel server for compute-intensive tasks. The project is located
in the Life Science Basic Research TTP of The Norwegian Consortium for
High Performance Computing. The software product will be of use for multiple
levels of investigation in neurobiology and biomedical neuroscience, ranging
from studies of nerve networks in insects to brain cartography in primates.
