Partners Coordinator: Neural
Systems and Graphics Computing Laboratory, Professor Jan G. Bjaalie
(P.I) and Computing analyst Christian Pettersen The Neural Systems and Graphics Computing Laboratory is project coordinator and end user. The laboratory deals with experimental and computational neuroanatomy and studies distributed neural systems in the mammalian brain. It has developed software for three-dimensional reconstruction, visualization, and quantitative analyses of neuronal populations and brain regions (which serve as a basis for the present project) and software for anatomical data acquistion from image combining computerized microscopes. Besides multiple computers, including Unix (Silicon Graphics) workstations and servers, the laboratory has complete facilities for experimental neuroanatomy and histology including advanced customized image-combining computerized microscopes and image analysis systems. The laboratory is currently funded by the Centre for Molecular Biology and Neuroscience, The Research Council of Norway, the European Commission, and The Jahre Foundation.
Senior scientist Helge
Avlesen and Professor Terje O. Espelid Parallab (Parallel Computation Laboratory) is conducting research in cutting edge high performance computing, with a special emphasis on bridging the gap between computer science and computational sciences as well as the gap between academic research and industrial needs. With its expertise in parallelisation and optimisation, it contributes heavily to the main work packages of this project. Parallab staff consists of 10 highly qualified computational scientists and will also involve staff from the Department of Informatics, University of Bergen.
Senior Scientists
Øyvind Hjelle and Jens Olav Nygaard The Department of Geometry at SINTEF Applied Mathematics is currently the largest independent geometry group in Norway, and probably in Europe. In the eighties, its work was focused on Computer Aided Design. Today it also deals with terrain modelling, animation, medical geometric modelling, entertainment, geology and seismics. Senior scientist Øyvind Hjelle, and other personell (to be decided) will contribute to the present project.
Senior engineer Leif Reidar Røkkum, Senior analyst Simen Gaure The Scientific Computing Group at USIT has a wide range of programming and computing infrastructure experience. USIT supports the NOTUR High Performance Computing installation at The University of Oslo.
Associate Professor Tor Jørgen Almaas, Professor Hanna Mustaparta. The group of Hanna Mustaparta at the Department of Zoology, NTNU, has long standing experience with physiological and structural investigations of insect nervous systems. The group has used computerized tools developed by the present project coordinator, and other tools for visualisation as well as 3-D reconstruction of biological data and has published papers with the use of computerized methods. The group contributes in the specification phase, and later with the testing and dissemination of the new application. |
