CEMS MIM and MSc

CEMS MIM can be combined with all MSc-profiles at NHH, without prolonging your studies (except for internship). The CEMS MIM will then constitute your minor and the electives. Two courses will be overlapping with your major, and as such will be mandatory.

CEMS MIM and the "Siviløkonom"-program

CEMS MIM combined with the "Siviløkonom"-program is 3 semesters. The total CEMS MIM-program substitutes 3 courses ( 22.5 study points) in the "Siviløkonom"-program. The final semester at NHH the student must take 3 courses (22.5 study points), and write the thesis.

Students with this combination will be able to document their academic specialisation from NHH on their final diploma. The 3 courses taken at NHH have to be within one area of specialisation, and the thesis has to be written within the same area. To graduate from CEMS it is a requirement that the student has graduated for the home-degree (Siviløkonom).

CEMS Blocked Seminar

Blocked seminars are intensive courses that will take place over one week at the beginning of the fall term. Dates may vary among the different schools. Subjects derive from different cultural and academic perspectives, and in many cases the topics will not be a part of the schools' curricula.

Normally students will take the Blocked seminar at the school where they are spending their fall term, however there are possibilities to switch to another Blocked seminar if you find another topic more interesting. Travel costs must then be carried by the student. The Blocked Seminar will usually take place at a location away from the school, and students will be asked for a financial contribution (200 EURO) to cover accommodation costs.

Blocked seminar at NHH fall 2004 was held at Hotel Fjordslotte, Osterøy.

CEMS MIM courses

The total CEMS MIM program requires that the students take 6 CEMS courses, a minimum 3 of these must be CEMS core courses.  4 courses should be done in the fall and 2 in the spring.

CEMS courses have been specially designed for the CEMS MIM program and are often a cooperation between faculty from several CEMS institutions, and representatives from Corporate partners. Each CEMS school tries to offer courses that reflect the subject areas which are typical for each school.

Information about the CEMS MIM courses at NHH can be found in the NHH student handbook online, chapter 16.

CEMS Business Project

Business Projects are real cases for real companies. Student teams of maximum 5 students with different nationalities will work on a Business Project during the spring semester.  The student team will be tutored and evaluated by both the company as well as an academic tutor.

CEMS MIM-students have to fulfil the Business Project at the school they spend the spring semester at. A CEMS Business Project  constitutes 15 ECTS-credits.

CEMS Skills Seminar

Skills Seminars are designed to give students different skills which will be valuable in work-life. Such skills include communication, negotiation, teamwork, time management, change management, conflict resolution, presentation techniques and intercultural knowledge. The seminars are held by company representatives or by faculty.

CEMS MIM-students have to complete 4 days of Skill Seminars. They can be completed either fall or spring. Normally one skill seminar will run over two days.

  • Intercultural understanding
  • Teamwork and Teamwork-abilities
  • Brand Management

CEMS Internship

CEMS MIM includes an internship abroad. Internships provide students with a real life professional experience where the main objective is to turn theoretical knowledge into a professional, multi-cultural experience. The internship must cover a consecutive period of at least 10 weeks full time in the same company, and can take place at any time during the graduate period of studies. First 10 weeks of the first job after studies can also be validated.

The CEMS network includes many Corporate Partners. Hydro and Statoil are the Norwegian Corporate Partners. The internship can take place with the Corporate Partners in CEMS, but also with other companies. The internship does not have to be done in Europe, but can take place anywhere in the world as long as it takes place outside the students' home country (if home school country and country of origin is different, only one country is excluded).

The CEMS schools will try to help students in finding internships, but in general each student will have to make an effort in finding his/her own internship. Companies offer internships via the jobline.org on the CEMS's website. Students who are accepted to the CEMS MIM will receive a password to be able to enter the jobline.org.

When the internship is fulfilled the company has to write an evaluation of the intern. The CEMS Evaluation Form should then be sent to the CEMS coordinator at the students home school.

Often internships are unpaid or at least not paid very well.

CEMS Language tests

CEMS MIM students must  be fluent in two foreign languages. English is mandatory as the first foreign language for students that do not have English as their mother tongue. The second foreign language has to be one of the major European languages or Russian.

The most important issue in terms of language qualifications is the formal evaluation which takes place as part of the CEMS MIM. All CEMS MIM-students must sit for both written and oral tests in business communication in two languages. The tests are quite demanding both in terms of content and testing method. Normally students take the tests after having spent their term abroad or having been abroad in relation to an internship. At the cems.org students can find preparation material for the language tests.

CEMS Semester abroad

A mandatory element for the CEMS MIM , which is a great motivation factor for students, is the term abroad at another CEMS school. The term abroad can take place either in the fall or in the spring semester. The students that are selected for the CEMS MIM will as far as possible be awarded a place at the CEMS school of their choice and in accordance with their language qualifications.

A student will not always get his/her first choice of CEMS school, however by participating in the CEMS MIM the students are a part of a network of schools, companies and students from all over Europe and thus have a unique opportunity to build networks across countries.
