Activities and aims
NIKK constitutes a bridge between Nordic gender research and equality politics.
NIKK co-operates closely with Nordic Ministers for Co-operation on Gender Equality and Nordic Executive Committee on Gender Equality.
NIKK aims at ensuring a dynamic, active, and well-founded joint Nordic gender equality politics in collaboration with the respective Nordic presidency.
NIKK contributes to the implementation of the Nordic cooperation programme on gender equality: "Focus on Gender: Working toward an Equal Society" (2006-2010).
NIKK's activities are divided into two areas:
* Projects:
NIKK initiates, co-ordinates, and executes projects that focus on central gender equality issues, i.e. research and development, statements, surveys, and reports.
* Research communication and information:
NIKK disseminates gender research results and gender equality policies primarily through www.nikk.uio.no and NIKK magasin. In addition NIKK serves as a platform for general information. The staff at NIKK is available for expert assignments and lectures.
NIKK hosts temporarily the two referee journals NORA: Nordic Journal of Women´s Studies and NORMA: Nordic Journal of Masculinity Studies.
NIKK cooperates with local and national research centres, associations, information and documentation centres as well as with gender equality units in the Nordic countries.
"Nordic synergy"
Nordic cooperation is one of the world’s most extensive forms of regional collaboration,
involving Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and three autonomous areas: the Faroe
Islands, Greenland, and Åland.
Nordic cooperation has firm traditions in politics, the economy, and culture. It plays an important
role in European and international collaboration, and aims at creating a strong Nordic
community in a strong Europe.
Nordic cooperation seeks to safeguard Nordic and regional interests and principles in the
global community. Common Nordic values help the region solidify its position as one of the
world’s most innovative and competitive.
