Is the note genuine?

All Norwegian banknotes are equipped with security features that enable a genuine note to be identified. There are features that can be seen with the naked eye such as: holographic foil strip, watermark, security thread and strip with mother-of-pearl effect. For more information see the brochure "Ta seddelsjekken" (in Norwegian only) or click on the links to the individual banknote denominations in the menu on the left. You will also find there a description of further security features that can be checked with various aids.

In addition to the security features, all Norwegian banknotes are printed in intaglio on cotton paper. This gives them a special "feel" which distinguishes them from copies on ordinary paper. If you notice that a note "feels" different when you receive it, it is important that you carry out some extra tests.

The number of counterfeit Norwegian notes is small compared to the number used daily for making payments, but if you receive a counterfeit note, you are the one who loses. The proliferation of copying machines, PC scanners and printers means that equipment that can be used to make copies of notes is readily available, and it is therefore important that you check the notes involved when you carry out cash transactions.

You should report any attempts to pay with counterfeit notes to the police. You should also go to the police if you discover counterfeit notes in your own possession.
