Collateral for loans

Banks have access to loans and deposits in the central bank. Loans are extended against collateral.

Links to the documents relating to banks' access to loans follow.

Current

On 1 November 2005, Norges Bank introduced new rules for banks’ furnishing of collateral. In connection with the introduction of the new rules, a transitional period was stipulated for securities that were already deposited, but that did not satisfy the new rules (see Norges Bank’s Circular no. 7 of 19 October 2005). The transitional period expires on 1 November 2007, and with effect from this date, the following deposited ISIN will no longer be approved as collateral for loans in Norges Bank.

Requests to release collateral must be received by Norges Bank no later than 12 noon if the collateral is to be released on the same day. Securities issued in Australia, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Jersey, Guernsey and the US will be approved as well as securities issued in the EEA area.

The Alternative Bond Market (ABM) on the Oslo Stock Exchange has been approved as an alternative market place for listing securities pledged as collateral for loans.
