The exchange rate for the Thai baht comes from the foreign exchange market outside of Thailand (“the offshore market”) and may differ from the exchange rate quoted in Thailand.

Since the Thai authorities introduced new stringent foreign exchange restrictions on 18 December 2006, the difference between the domestic rate and the unregulated "offshore market" rate has increased. At present, the offshore market rate is approximately 6% higher than the domestic rate.

Tourists travelling to Thailand may therefore find, for instance when using credit cards, that the exchange rate is lower than Norges Bank’s middle rate. Norges Bank is here in line with the ECB, which has chosen to use the offshore rate.
