Required Previous Knowledge: Knowledge as in subject TKT4140 Numerical methods.

This subject is being taught every second year, next time in the fall of 2009 The emphasis is on computational methods for practical fluid flow problems. Although not specifically dealt with in the course, the methods to be presented are readily generalized to handle the accompanying heat and mass transfer problems. Methods for inviscid, viscous and turbulent flow regimes are presented, and the methods are equally applicable to two and three-dimensional flow configurations.

Course Materials: Information will be given at course startup.

Teaching Methods: Lectures, exercises and simulation problems

Learning Goals: The aim of the course is to familiarize the participants with a selection of advanced topics in CFD. The essential knowledge necessary to understand and apply these modern and yet practical computational methods will be provided.

Energy Scenarios and Environmental Discourse

Previous Required/Recommended Knowledge: None

Academic Content: Based on different environmental perspectives the course shows the relation between energy and environment, and it gives basic knowledge on fossil and renewable energy resources. Scenarios incorporating sustainable environmentally friendly energy systems based on solar energy, like photovoltaic cells, solar heating, wind power and bio mass, are discussed in particular. Further, technical possibilities and limitations in different energy conversion processes are considered. The conversion from fossil energy carriers to hydrogen and other energy friendly energy ones, for use in stationary and mobile systems, is discussed in particular. The course also considers strategies and conditions related to the society and consequences for energy use and development of sustainable energy technology.

Course Material: Environmental Discourses, Oxford University Press Bowen, Michael (1998): Cool Energy: Renewable Solutions to Environmental Problems, Oxford: Oxford University Press Novakovic, Vojislav red. (2000): Energi i Norge: Ressurser, teknologi og miljø, Trondheim: SINTEF Energiforskning Additional study texts will be given at start of the course.

Teaching Methods: Lectures, exercises, project work and technical tours. 75% of the exercise work must be approved. The project work must be submitted within the lecturing period.

Learning Goals: This interdisciplinary course, with contributions from engineering and basic university fields, is meant to give an introduction to important facts, perspectives and approaches to problems in the intersection of energy, environment, technology, society and time.
