PK6010
Reliability Assessment of Safety-Critical Systems
Continuing education course lectured in English
The course gives an introduction to risk analysis
and reliability assessment of safety instrumented systems (SIS). The
focus is on the requirements in the IEC 61508 and related standards.
Time:
- Part 1: 16-17 October, 2006
- Part 2: 18-20 October, 2006
- Part 3: 06-10 November, 2006
Place: NTNU, Trondheim
Extent of course:
7.5 credits (in the NTNU/ECTS system) Target
group: Personnel involved in design, verification, and
operation of safety instrumented systems (SIS). Qualifications
required: The course is an introductory course and
requires limited prior knowledge. The participants should, however,
have studied at least 3 years at university level. Participant who are
familiar with probability theory, and have a basic knowledge of risk
and reliability analysis, may skip Part 1 and start directly on Part 2.
Course material:
A special compendium (in English) will be prepared for the course.

fee: NOK 15.900,-
Course objectives During the course the
participants will: - Get insight into
different types of safety instrumented systems and the demands for such
systems
- Get an overview of the contents of
important standards like IEC 61508, IEC 61511, and EN50129 and the OLF-070 guideline.
- Learn
about failures and failure classification, e.g., random hardware
failures and systematic failures
- Learn how the
reliability of such systems can be estimated and assessed
- Learn
about reliability data, quality of data, and data sources
- Get
insight into special topics related to such systems, like common cause
failures and software integrity
Coures presentation -
Lectures
- Coursework/exercises (carried out by
groups of 3-4 students). Reports from the coursework have to be
prepared, and will be marked and form a basis for the evaluation.
