Advanced Engineering/Master's Degree Programme, 5 years
Nanotechnology
– About the Programme
Nanotechnology – behind the wheel towards the future!
Imagine combining atoms and molecules to create new materials. Materials that give us new medicines, clean energy technology and original electronic 'gadgets'. The possibilities are only limited by our imagination. At NTNU, you may take an MSc-degree in nanotechnology. 'Nano' means 'billionth' and comes from the Greece word nanos, which means 'dwarf'. One nanometre equals one billionth meter, which is about 10 times the diameter of an atom. Nanotechnology involves studying and manipulating different materials at atomic level. This provides the opportunity to design materials with unique properties, which again gives the possibility of producing products with brand new qualities.
When moving down to atomic level, we combine the traditionally separated subjects physics, chemistry and biology, thus making broad expertise important to understand the entirety. For this reason, nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field, which is also reflected in the range of application: medicine, electronics and renewable energy, just to mention a few examples.
Nanotechnology requires advanced equipment and the opportunity to work in controlled conditions in so-called 'clean rooms'. NTNU is currently building new clean room laboratories which will be used for teaching purposes as well as research. These laboratories will be localized close to each other and thus invite to interdisciplinary cooperation.
The programme suits - anyone prepared to accept a challenge by developing tomorrow's technology and having particular interest in natural science. If you think it sounds exciting to research in the intersection between the traditional disciplines medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, materials science, and electronics, this programme is precisely what you have been looking for. An exciting adventure awaits you – by exploring how the tiniest parts of nature may be used in new ways, you may be a partaker in developing a sustainable society throughout the 21st century.
About the programme The advanced engineering programme in Nanotechnology is an inter-faculty study where different nano-courses run like a scarlet thread throughout the entire programme. From the first semester, you will discover new ideas and opportunities that emerge by using nano-materials and nano-components, a challenge which offers joy and inspiration throughout your period of study.
The first three years of the programme will provide thorough knowledge in chemistry, physics and mathematics. At the same time, you will be introduced to nano-scale systems, manipulation of atoms and molecules, and gain insight in the use of modern nano-tools. As an integrated part of the programme you will also be confronted with ethical, as well as environmental aspects associated with the use of nanotechnology.
The final two years you will specialize in one of the following areas: Nanoelectronics, Bionano-technology, Nanostructured Materials, or Nanotechnology for Energy and Environment.
1st, 2nd and 3rd year: From the first semester, nano-courses run like a scarlet thread throughout the entire programme. In addition, basic courses within for instance mathematics, physics, chemistry, programming and electronics are included.
3rd year: One of the following course combinations (fields of study) is chosen:
Nanoelectronics
Bionanotechnology
Nanostructured Materials
Nanoteknologi for energi og miljø
4th year: - Compulsory and elective nano-courses - Non-technological courses
