About Tromsø

The CEO-ML is a research team with members from the Department of Physics and Technology, University of Tromsø and from the research institute Norut IT. Both are located in Tromsø, Norway. The premises of the Department of Physics and Technology are known as the Auroral Observatory. Geophysical observations of aurorae (northern lights), magnetic field, and ionosphere have been recorded here since 1928, following in the footsteps of pioneer geophysicist Kristian Birkeland

Tromsø is a town of less than 70.000 inhabitants, but the highly active nightlife, sports and cultural arenas reflect that it is both the regional capital of Northern Norway and the home to the University of Tromsø, the northernmost university in the world. In Tromsø you can find anything from Tromsø International Film Festival, Bukta - a popular three-day open air rock festival, Tromsø IL - the northernmost premier league football club in the world, to Midnight Sun Marathon - a truly exotic race where the winner is greeted at the middle of the night. And many other events that attract both national and international participators.

Tromsø is situated at almost 70 degrees northern latitude, well above the arctic circle. As a consequence, we enjoy two months without sunset between May and July, but must also endure two months without sun and only limited daylight between November and January. The average temperature ranges from -3.5 degrees C in January to a modest 11.8 degrees C in July. The snow record from the spring of 1997 is 240 cm, making Tromsø a serious competitor for the Olympic Winter Games in 2018. The mild and snowy winter is perfect for outdoor activities, but calls for warm clothing, good footwear and headgear. The opportunities in summer are also abundant, with sea, forest, and mountains inviting to sailing, hiking or climbing activities that start practically at your doorstep.

There are many daily flights to Tromsø Airport from Oslo and a number of Norwegian towns. There are also connections to Murmansk (Russia), Kiruna (Sweden), and more irregularily to some capitals in Europe during summer. More information for prospective visitors is found here
