The Centre for Sami Studies at the University of Tromsø is working to establish an interdisciplinary research program on fisheries in a Sami context. This is a cooperative project involving the Sami University College , the Finnmark University College , the Institute of Marin Research – the Tromsø department, and the Nordic Sami Institute. The program is referred to as the Sami Fisheries Research Program or as FÁVLLIS- a Sami word that can mean “in the depths of the sea” or  “far out on the ocean.”

A preliminary project has been completed with support from the Council for Higher Education in Northern Norway . The goal is to establish a research program with the main focus on administration (including legal and knowledge based topics), ecology and creation of local economic value. The program is directed at ecological processes in Sami coastal and fjord areas while relating this to questions of management, administration and rights. Regional conditions are placed in the context of international concern for sustainable development and biodiversity.

The working group in charge of the project has scientific, legal and social science competence with additional input from the fisheries competence of the Sami Parliament. (Read More)

As of June 2004 the cooperating institutions are applying for support from the Norwegian Research Council in order to strengthen their institutional cooperation and develop the technical and scientific content of the program.
