The Political Economy of Free/Open SoftwareThis is the homepage of a social science project on the ownership, distribution and consumption of computer code, as well as on the charismatic, legal and traditional justification of it. At these pages we will present a recently started study of Free Software, also known as Open Source Software. It is a study of the movement or community that makes this software, and it is a study of the social organisation, the technology, the ideologies and the rationalities of this movement. Empirically, it is a sociological study of two sites; the Norwegian Open Source-project SkoleLinux, and the use of Open Source-programs in some selected Norwegian firms. As social scientists within the STS tradition (Social studies
of Technology ans Science)
we investigate empirically how the commons
known as Free/Open Software is actually made.
We assume that this making takes place through processes
that are heterogeneous and both social, technical and cultural. Events:We are co-arranging a session at EASST, more here. And we are co-editing a Special Issue for Sience Studies. Programme: here Coming Up: Nye medier: Mellom marked og politikk NRF Brukerkonferanse 25. oktober 2006
