Soil Science Group

Leader: Arne Stuanes

”Soil is one of the most valuable resources we have. It makes it possible for plants, animals and man to survive on planet Earth”

The Soil Science Group is responsible for providing decision-makers with the best possible knowledge to make important decisions linked to the management of soil resources. The group has a fundamental understanding of soil development and soil processes as part of ecosystems. Processes in the soil are of decisive importance for the production of safe food and the control of pollutants. An understanding of biological, geochemical and hydrological processes in soils is also vital for a realistic evaluation of the effects on soil and water caused by global change.

The Soil Science Group has Norway’s most comprehensive competence in soils, biogeochemical processes in soils, and soil development. The group’s research is focussed on binding, transport and bioavailability of plant nutrients, other metals and organic compounds in soil in relation to soil, plant, and water quality; and on terrestrial biogeochemistry and its relevance for ecosystem responses under changes in environmental conditions such as land use and climate.

The group has strong co-operation with the national research institutes Bioforsk, Norwegian Forest and Landscape Research Institute, Norwegian Institute for Water Research, Norwegian Institute for Air Research, and a number of international research institutes.

The group’s teaching responsibilities include courses in soil morphology, soil classification, soil quality, plant nutrition and fertilization, global and local pollution, and process modelling.

The group is responsible for the following courses:
JORD201 Prosess Modelleling in Soil, Water and Plant Systems
JORD242 Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition
JORD243 Soil Analysis and Fertilization Planning
JORD250 Soil Morphology
JORD251 Soil Classification
JORD252 Soil Classification and Soil Quality
JORD260 Tropical soils, their properties and mangement
JORD310 Global and Local Pollution
JORD340 Soil Fertility and Soil Management
MINA200 Pollution - Environment
