Specialisation in Tropical Ecology and Management of Natural Resources
Department of Academic Affairs
• Do you want to learn how animals, plants, soils and climate interact to form the magnificent range of tropical ecosystems?
• Would you like to collect field data in some of the most spectacular wildlife areas in Africa, Asia and Latin America?
• Do you find it challenging to tackle the many theoretical and practical problems involved in natural resource management?
• And do you want to study in a cross-cultural environment?
Specialisation in Tropical Ecology and Management of Natural Resources |
What can you use this qualification for?
The specialisation provides the competence to work in advisory or managerial positions within natural resource management. The opportunities include jobs in protected areas in Africa, Asia or Latin America, positions in ministries and regional and local offices, NGOs, consultancies, teaching, or working as wildlife managers, planners and conservationists.
Contents
The specialisation provides an advanced understanding of tropical ecosystems. You will learn how to apply this knowledge in management and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity.
The teaching will require interactive participation of the students through presentations, case studies, short thematic reviews, term papers and discussion sessions.
The duration of the study is 2 years starting in August. One year consists of course work, and one year is set aside for individual research projects. The research project will lead to a Master’s thesis.
Students obtain:
• a solid understanding of the concepts in ecology at the population, community and ecosystem level
• an in-depth knowledge of species behaviour/responses and interactions in different systems
• an understanding of tools for species extractions, field methodologies, analytic techniques, restoration, management strategies and conventions, all applicable to a range of systems
• an insight into human activities that shape, maintain and manage ecosystems
Requirements
The applicants must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, in natural sciences. (e.g. biology, ecology, agricultural or environmental sciences).
The study program is under revision and the requirements may be subjected to change.
