Title: “Establishing a breeding program in carp in Serbia”.
Supervisor: Dr Kari Kolstad, Dep.of Animal and Aquaculture Sciences / Akvaforsk – Institut of Aquaculture Research AS
This work is a part of a project between Akvaforsk and Agricultural University of Belgrade. The main attempt of this work is to find out what is the best possible way to establish a breeding program in Serbia. The important issues that are discussed in the master thesis are: 1) How to establish a base population and where, 2) Defining of a breeding goal 3) Select breeding strategy, 4) Chose selection methods, 5) Identification of animals 6) Select mating design 7) Protocol for testing strategies. In the master thesis are also analyzed carp data by using statistics software of the SAS and the estimates of genetic parameters were obtained from a mixed linear animal model using the DMU package (Madsen and Jensen, 2002) Utilizing of selective breeding program is the best option for improving the fish stock that already exists in Serbia. Selective breeding gives genetic improvement that is permanent, cumulative and highly-cost effective.
