With approximately 235 staff members, the Faculty of Education at the University of Oslo is Norway's largest and most progressive institution for the educational sciences. The faculty was formally constituted on 1 January 1996 and today consists of two departments and one institute: The Institute for Educational Research, The Department of Special Needs Education and The Department of Teacher Education and School Development. In addition, the faculty hosts two departments: InterMedia and the Network for IT-Research and Competence in Education (ITU). Intermedia is an interdisciplinary centre at the University of Oslo, while ITU was set up by Norway's Ministry of Education, Research and Church Affairs to address information technology and education up to the college level.
