Health and social insurance

National Social Insurance Scheme

Students from the Nordic countries, the UK and Northern Ireland benefit from bilateral agreements which their respective countries have entered with Norway. As a result they do not need social security coverage from their home country.

All students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland must bring with them a valid E111 or E128 certificate, obtainable in their home countries, which entitles them to medical care in accordance with the Norwegian National Health Scheme. Expenses related to illnesses contracted before arrival in Norway, dental care, and eye treatment are not covered.

After arrival, exchange students from other parts of the world may apply for voluntary enrolment in the Norwegian National  Social Insurance Scheme. The minimum period of stay for qualifying as an applicant is more than 3 months. After having stayed in Norway for more than a year, a student will automatically be covered through the National Social Insurance Scheme "Folketrygden".

Please note that the National Scheme does not apply before students are registered at HiST, and not after they have completed their studies here or when traveling abroad during the semester. Students are advised to get sufficient insurance before leaving their home country. The insurance should cover any accident, illness, injury, loss or damage to people or property resulting from, or in any way connected to, the study period in Norway.

National Identification Number

If you are staying in Norway for six months or longer, you must obtain a National Identity Number. This number consists of 11 digits, and is made up of your date of birth and 5 other digits. For students studying less than six months it is possible to get a D-number. Please note that  it is not possible to open a bank account in a Norwegian bank without this ID number, but it may take several weeks to obtain one. Read more about the ID numbers here. You may apply for your ID number from Trondheim Tax Office
