Marin Biology and Seafood Processing

Duration: 3 years

Degree:
Bachelor of Marin Biology and Seafood Processing.
The study is organized in three branches: aquaculture, food processing and marine biotechnology.

Entry requirements:
Minimum college entrance requirements and 2MX/2MY (Mathematics - 2 yr.)
and one of the following: 2BI (Biology - 2 yr.), 2FY (Physics - 2 yr.) or 2 KJ (Chemistry - 2 yr.).
All applicants must have had 5 hour/week in natural sciences.

Target group for the study is persons who want a higher education which qualifies to jobs within the Sea farming- and Food industry. Prior to starting their study, the students must have finished high school/upper secondary school. Alternatively, it is also possible for students, having relevant experience from trade and industry, to begin the study.

Aims and objectives:
The main objective of the study is to educate personnel to a midlevel within marine biotechnology, the Aquaculture and Food Processing industry. The students achieve basic knowledge in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and marine biology, which in addition to Introduction to Statistics and Business Economy together with the specialization they choose, give the student a variety of opportunities to work in the industry as well as further studies.
Within Aquaculture one emphasizes analyses of water and localities, the understanding of environment and organisms, knowledge to central species, besides fish health. One also emphasizes the importance of running a sea farming plant, where the students at the College's fish farming plant can practice what they have learned during their study.
Within Food processing the students achieve knowledge from the food industry, specific processes and quality assurance of food items. One specializes against fish processing.
Marine Biotechnology serves to unite the fields of marine biology knowledge and modern molecular and cellular work methods. The aim of the Bachelor Degree Programme in Marine Biotechnology is largely for students to gain a basic understanding of life processes, adaptation, and interplay on the molecular level in the marine environment. Within 2007 it will be possible to offer the students Master's Degree Programme in Marine Biotechnology.
The students qualify to work as company leaders, consultants in private and public sector, operation supervisors, as well as a sales manager and quality assurance. They will also be able to teach, besides function as laboratory engineers and research assistants.
The study allows also for further studies (primarily on Master degree level) within relevant studies.

Teaching methods:
The teaching is based on lectures, laboratory work, group teaching, and literature search. The last semester the students will do a lecture which completes the study.
For all courses where laboratory works are included, appearance is compulsory and the students must have an approved laboratory journal prior to the examination.

Structure and activities:
The first three semesters are common for all students. From the 4th Semester it is possible for the students to specialize within marine biotechnology, aquaculture or food industry studies.
For the content of the study, its structure and composition it is referred to the curriculum. For details it is referred to the course descriptions.

The study is based on basic courses, some with laboratory exercises to support the theoretical teaching, and for more applied courses, the possibility to exert skills that are professionally directed, as well as within the College's own laboratories as in cooperation with the economic life and trade industry, besides public administration. If the student chooses Aquaculture as a special subject, practice will constitute an amount of work corresponding to three Norwegian credits in the fifth semester.
The sum of the credits after 3 years must be at least 180, and also include all the required courses in the study.

Students from AAUC have the opportunity to continue on a master degree at the University of Bergen (UiB) or The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB).
