ECTS

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is part of the Erasmus programme.

ECTS provides instruments which create transparency and build bridges between institutions. The result is a wider selection of opportunities available to students. The system facilitates the recognition of educational achievements between countries through, for instance, the use of common measurements for credits and grades. In this way it provides possibilities to interpret national systems of higher education.

  • ECTS credits, which are numerical values, describe the student workload required to complete a certain course. 60 ECTS credits represent the workload required to complete one year of full-time studies, while 30 credits represent one semester.
  • Information about various institutions, faculties, organisations, study structures, and course units is readily available.
  • An ECTS transcript of records will present academic achievements in a manner that is comprehensive, commonly understood and easily transferable from one institution to another.

When students have successfully completed their study programme, previously agreed on between the home and host institutions, and return home to their respective institutions, they may continue their studies without any loss of time or credits.
