Study methods
Throughout the study the emphasis is put on both practical and theoretical knowledge. Important study methods within the programme: Practical training, lectures, group work, personal studies, dividing students into groups lasting all three years, supervision, topic/problem based learning, seminar, excursions, skill training, papers, project work, and a major project. (See pp. 10-13 Fagplan for barnevernspedagogutdanningen Bachelor, 2002).

Practical training
The practical training shall ensure that the students increase their understanding of the connection between research, theory and practical work. Observation, co-operation, supervision and practical testing within the field of child care are all factors of great importance for the students’ ability to develop and become aware of their own position at work.

Practical training is meant to be an integrated part of the programme, which may be linked to any of the major subjects. It shall challenge the students to pursue professional and ethical reflection, and to study knowledge in-depth. During their practical training the students learn to better know their own feelings and attitudes, and to develop their own abilities to communicate and co-operate.

In the practical training the students shall experience how it is to work with children and youths. The training shall be adapted to the students’ professional development. (See pp. 10,11 Fagplan for barnevernspedagogutdanningen Bachelor, 2002).
