This programme emphasises the close relationship between the knowledge of the subject and the pedagogical skills needed to teach the subject. The students work with materials, tools and techniques to create their own original work, and develop their knowledge and skills for the teaching of children and adults. An understanding of art, design, architecture and educational theory provides a basis for reflection and teaching, and provides a perspective on the student’s own artistic projects. Through supervised teaching practice, students gain experience of a school environment, where they can learn to inspire others and encourage their learning processes.

Most of the teaching takes place in workshops, where technical and subject didactics are applied to the students’ own creative work. Teaching includes both lectures and demonstrations, independent practical and theoretical studies, and working in the computer lab. The teaching practice is of thirteen weeks’ duration spread over three years. The programme includes at least one study tour. As part of the programme students may study abroad at a partner institution, preferably in the Nordic region.
The programme qualifies students for teaching positions in primary and secondary schools, folk high schools and adult-education programmes. Students who complete the programme will be qualified to work in art and culture institutions, or to engage in various workshop activities. The programme also provides a basis for admission to the MA in Art and Design Education.
