Content:

This is foundation programme in which students, with a basis in local design culture, will be able to create their own products and develop skills in creative work and instruction. At the beginning of the programme, students choose whether they will work with wood, metal or textiles. The aim of the programme is to provide students with a theoretical and practical introduction to Norwegian folk art. By ‘folk art’, we mean those traditional material art forms that have been developed in Norwegian rural areas up until the present day.
Main courses in the programme:
Historical subjects (12 ECTS)
Subject didactics (6 ECTS)
Aesthetical subjects (12 ECTS)
Workshop subjects (30 ECTS)

Teaching and learning methods:

Consists mainly of workshop practice with close individual supervision. The year of study is divided into project periods. The instruction is generally on fixed weekdays, but may be more frequent in periods. The programme also includes an obligatory study trip. The final 10 weeks of the programme are dedicated to the final project.

Careers / further study:

Several of the graduates from the Department of Folk Culture at Rauland are now employed in teaching positions in various kinds of schools, and some combine this with careers in the field of the Arts. Depending on which specialisation was chosen as part of their degree, graduates may find careers as mediators in the cultural sector, folk music curators or handicraft consultants etc. The programme gives access to the international network of folk musicians and folk artists and may open for future careers. This programme may be combined with other higher education programmes within the cultural sphere, or form a part of the 4-year

General Teacher Education and a BA degree. The programme qualifies for admission to MA Traditional Norwegian Arts.
