Completion of the programme qualifies the student for certification as a registered nurse. The programme consists of both theory and practice; practical work experience comprises 90 of the 180 total ECTS. Students will receive training in how to become effective professionals with the appropriate skills and attitudes in their relationships with patients and their families. The field of nursing spans numerous areas such as nursing science; the natural sciences and the social sciences. The study programme is comprised of four major course units which are emphasised to varying degrees over the course of the programme: Nursing’s Professional and Scientific Foundation; Nursing Profession and Professional Foundation; Medical and Natural Sciences Topics and Social Sciences Topics. Each year of study includes a period of practical work experience, which will be carried out in Telemark county. The programme emphasises internationalisation and cross-cultural understanding. During the 3rd year of the study programme practical work experience may be pursued abroad. The department has established contacts with many institutions in Europe, the US and Africa.
The study programme is organised into course units, and each course unit must first be completed before starting a new one. Students learn and develop nursing skills through an interaction between theoretical teaching, simulations in the practice department and work with patients during their periods of practical work experience. Through resources lectures and classroom teaching, project work and reflection groups students will be given the opportunity to integrate and consolidate subject material.
The part time programme is based on the same curriculum as the full time study programme. The subject material is the same, but the part time programme utilises student portfolios as both a learning and teaching method, and in the assessment of the students. The part-time programme is to a great extent based on the use of Internet, video conferencing and other ICT methods.
