Course Description

The aim is that the student will:

• Gain knowledge regarding treatment, relief of suffering, rehabilitation/habilitation, health-promoting and preventative functions and tasks.
• Acquire a theoretical foundation so as to be able to assess, plan, evaluate and document the nursing requirements of acute, critically and chronically ill patients of all ages.
• Acquire nursing skills relating to specialist health services.

Course unit 1 - 2 - 1 The History and Traditions of Nursing

• The hospital as an organisation – viewed in a developmental perspective

Course unit 1 - 2 - 2 The Scientific Foundation of Nursing

• Nursing as science
• The application of scientific knowledge
• The documentation of nursing
• The theories and models of nursing, with a special focus on the nursing of patients in the specialist health service (e.g. Benner and Wrubler, Joyce Travelbee)

Course unit 1 - 2 - 3 Nursing as a Clinical Subject

• Treatment, relief of suffering, rehabilitation/habilitation, preventative/health-promoting functions, administration, teaching/supervision, professional development aspects of nursing
• Important concepts with a special focus on nursing of patients in the specialist health service (e.g. hope, ‘meaning of life’, stress, coping, crisis, anxiety, suffering and death)
• Context (e.g. institution, hospital, family and social network)

Course unit 1- 2 - 4 Scientific Theory and Research Methods

• Introduction to research methods

Course unit 1 - 2 - 5 Ethics

• Ethical skills
• Ethical dilemmas in the practice of nursing (in relation to relevant nursing practice areas)

Course unit 1 - 2 - 6 Studies in Preparation for Practice

• Skills training
• Situation-oriented learning activities with a focus on the future practice placement
• Reflection

Assessment Methods

Main course code: 050SYK2 000 The Professional and Scientific Foundation of Nursing, Skills Training and Reflection: 2nd Year 15 ECTS

Course unit: 050SYK2 PR2 Individual Test in Practical Nursing Skills: 2nd Year 6 ECTS

The test will be assessed as pass/fail.

Course unit: 050SYK2 1-2 Main Course 1-2 and 2-2: Examination in Nursing: 2nd Year 9 ECTS

Individual, written home examination, which is awarded a graded mark.
