Main course unit 2: The Discipline of Nursing and the Foundation of the Nursing Profession – Practice: 3rd Year 050-0-3

Course Description

The aim is that the student should develop their ability to practice basic nursing in complex situations within the areas: mental health, community nursing, nursing homes, labour/post-natal and preventative health measures.

Students will:

• Identify and evaluate the consequences that various health problems/illness processes pose for the patient’s capacity and ability to maintain basic needs
• Observe and evaluate the patient in relation to their environment
• Evaluate and practice the various elements of nursing such as treatment, alleviation of suffering, rehabilitation/habilitation and/or preventative measures based on the patient’s needs and resources
• Participate in professional and cross-professional teamwork.
• Develop the knowledge and skills to enable them to carry out the nurse’s professional and administrative leadership roles
• Understand the importance of, and learn to use, research-based knowledge in practice
• Be able to recognise the importance of various values and knowledge for interaction with: patients, relatives, nurses and other professional groups
• Be able to independently and critically apply the relevant skills in communication with others
• Be able to function independently and creatively in new/complex situations and contribute to the professional development and quality assurance of nursing services
• Acquire knowledge concerning the appropriate organisation and change processes/leadership
• Be able to reflect and increase understanding of ethical, frameworks regarding health policies, ethical and judicial aspects, as well as social and cultural aspects and their significance for the practice of nursing

Course component 2 - 3 Nursing Practice Studies

Municipal health service – Home-based services, 8 weeks supervised practice studies with final assessment.

Nursing home, 4 weeks of practice studies with a focus on administration and management.

Mental health care, 8 weeks – supervised practice studies with final assessment.

Preventative health measures/ pregnancy and post-natal care, 2 + 2 weeks;

During the last two weeks of the period students will work on an assignment which will be based on observations carried out during practice and then related to theory. The assignment will be presented to co-students - refer to the course booklet.

The practice studies include a final project examination. Four weeks are allocated during the examination period for writing the project, distributed thus: 1 week in the autumn semester and 3 weeks in the spring semester.

Supervised 8 weeks practice studies. Assessed as pass/fail

Course component: 050-0-3 FHA Observation Practice – Preventative and Health-Promoting Work 4.5 ECTS
