About this Course
Code:
KJ1006
ECTS:
15.00
Level:
Bachelor
Duration of this Course:
2 semesters

Prerequisites

General admission requirements.

Course Objectives

Students will acquire a basic understanding of chemistry and the environment, and an appreciation of the causes and effects of those processes which result in environmental problems. They will learn strategies to avoid or reduce environmental problems.

Students will acquire knowledge of basic methods of chemical analysis and important laboratory techniques, good working procedures, proficiency and the maintenance of safety in the laboratory.

Learning Methods

Lectures, exercises and supervision in the laboratory.

Course Description

The structure of atoms and the periodic table, chemical binding, chemical equations and calculations, chemical names, solutions, chemical equilibrium; weight, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, electro-chemistry, organic chemistry, oil and plastics.

General ecology, air-pollution/purification of emissions to the atmosphere, water pollution/purification and discharges to water, refuse and its treatment, energy and the environment and working environments.

Chemistry laboratory: Quantitative analyses, physical/organic measurements, and organic synthesis.

Assessment Methods

Continuous assessment; 3 smaller examinations; and a final examination. All of the examinations are written. The 3 smaller exams are taken as the course progresses during the first semester. The final examination is in December.

The laboratory course is completed, and the laboratory journal approved, in May.
