F1502 Modeling of dynamic systems

F1502
About this Course
Code:
F1502
ECTS:
6.00
Level:
Master
Duration of this Course:
1 semester

Prerequisites

According to admission requirements

Course Objectives

To achieve abilities in formulating dynamic models based on the fundamental laws of physics and chemistry as well as standard simplifying assumptions, to achieve abilities in analyzing and solving the resulting models, and to achieve abilities in simulating dynamic models.

Learning Methods

Lectures, exercises, and the use of relevant software for PCs. In addition to the final test, 10 exercises are handed out in order to give the students practice in formulating and solving dynamic models. Also, a compulsory group project with oral presentation of the result is included to give practice in formulating and solving models.

Course Description

Formulation of dynamic models based on material, momentum, and energy balances. Population balances. Reaction kinetics. Overview of elementary thermodynamics. Phase equilibrium. Overview of irreversible thermodynamics and transport laws. Modeling of mechanical systems. Dimension analysis and model reduction. Elementary systems theory: solution of linear models, stability, zero dynamics. Coupled systems, co- and counter current flow systems, recirculation. Model uncertainty. Solution of models using computers.

Assessment Methods

The final test and the group problem weigh 60% and 40%, respectively, in the final grade. To be admitted to the final test, the group problem must have been handed in, and 60% of the exercises must be completed with grade passed.
