One semester
Prerequisites
3-year BSc Engineering or equivalent, and Basic Chemistry
Course Objectives
The course should give the students a thorough understanding of membranes, their material properties and different applications. The students shall be able to select the right type of membrane and understand their function fully in order to design a successful membrane process.
Learning Methods
Lectures and exercises, calculations as well as laboratory exercises. The teaching program is adapted for portable computers with relevant software
The lectures will be given in English
Course Description
The course is covering both gas and liquid separation with membranes, as well as fuel cell technology.
- Membrane materials,
- Properties of polymeric materials,
- Characterisation of porous and non-porous membranes,
- Transport in membranes.
- Membrane processes (pressure- concentration- thermally and electrically driven).
- Polarisation phenomena and fouling.
- Module and process design.
Assessment Methods
Semester evaluation counts 30%; individual, written final examination counts 70%. Laboratory exercises have to be approved.
