Prerequisites

General admission requirements.

Course Objectives

The course will provide students with insight into, and understanding of, fluid mechanics. Students will learn to calculate flow functions in an industrial context. The course will also provide students with basic knowledge to enable them to use computer tools related to the subject.

Course Description

The course includes a description of the characteristics of fluids, fluid statics and buoyancy, Bernoulli’s equation with loss and source point, mass, impulse and energy equations, dimensions analysis and uniformity, pressure on the surroundings from fluid in motion, interface, rotating machinery, compressible flow and gas dynamics. The course also includes the use of computer software for solving technological flow problems. Laboratory exercises relating to pressure loss in pipes and pumps is also part of the subject.

Learning Methods

Lectures, exercises, laboratory exercises and use of relevant computer software.

Assessment Methods

Written examination counts for 70% of the final grade, Mid-term examination counts for 30% of the final grade. Laboratory exercises and computer exercises must be approved.
