Transport Processes with CFD PT1006

About this Course
Code:
PT1006
ECTS:
10.00
Pensum:

Prerequisites

According to admission requirements.

Course Objectives

Get a systematic overview of material, energy and momentum balance equations and transfer rate equations (transport processes). Be able to use these equations for dimensioning of pipes, pumps, heat exchangers and filters. Additional items: Dimensioning of cylinder walls; dimensional analysis; gas/particle flow.

Learn to derive the conservation equations of fluiddynamics and to solve them with numerical methods and algorithms. Learn how to model turbulence.

Course Description

Material, energy and momentum balance equations and transfer rate equations (transport processes). Dimensioning of pipes, pumps, heat exchangers and filters. (These subjects, covering 4 credits, are in common with the course Water Processes and Ecology.) Dimensional analysis, dimensioning of cylinder walls, particle and powder mechanics, gas/particle flow.

Derivation of general mass, momentum and energy conservation equations. Boundary conditions for the conservation equations. Turbulence and its modeling. Numerical methods and algorithms for solving the conservation equations. Solving fluiddynamic problems with CFD software such as Fluent.

Learning Methods

Lectures, exercises and use of CFD software.

Assessment Methods

A final test counts 70 % and a mid-term test counts 30 %. Grades A-F will be used for both tests.
