Prerequisites

According to admission requirements.

Course Objectives

The course shall make the student able to analyse and solve practical problems related to the (appropriate) use of thermodynamic energy functions, to attain an understanding of the possibilities and inherent limitations of energy transformations, to understand the basic consepts of combustion theory, and to calculate phase equilibria in mixtures.

Course Description

The course consists of the following topics: Energy types and classifications, world energy consumption and outlook. The concepts of mass and energy concervation (1st law) and reversibility (2nd law) applied to closed and open (control volume) systems. Thermochemistry, stoichiometry, chemical equilibrium, flame temperature, reaction kinetics.Thermodynamic cycles (e.g. thermal power plants, heat pumps, refrigeration). Exergy analysis and 1st and 2nd law efficiencies. Relations between state functions and their derivatives. Total differentials, partial differentials and their meaning. Description of thermodynamic energy functions (U, H, A and G), departure functions and thermodynamic reference states. Selected volumetric equations of state for pure substances and mixtures. Phase equilibrium in a pure substance, fugacity. Calculation of vapor-liquid phase equilibria in mixtures (dew point, bubble point and isothermal flash) by equation of state method and activity models.

Learning Methods

Lectures and tutorials.

Assessment Methods

Mandatory tasks and/or test(s) counting 30%; individual, written final examination counts 70% of the grade. In order to pass the course, the student must pass the final exam.
