Course Objectives

The goals of major course unit 2 are that the students:

• have knowledge of the development of children and adolescents.
• are able to intervene in families to protect the health of children and adolescents.
• are able to apply knowledge of sexual health matters in the supervision of young people.
• develop a personal and reflective public health nurse role.
• are able to evaluate the conditions for health and threats to health at various levels.

Course unit 2.1: Children and Youth’s Growth, Development and Health in Modern Society

• Factors which promote and undermine people’s health
  - In a physical, social and existential perspective
  - Care – care skills – self-care
  o Nutrition
  o Mental health
  o Intoxication and tobacco
  o Violence and assault
• Pathological aspects and preventative strategies
• Developmental psychological perspectives
• Motivation and learning theories

Course unit 2.2: Interaction Parents/Children/ Youth

• Children, adolescents and family in a cultural perspective
• Theories on growing up and attachments
• Understanding of personal relations and supervision
  - Managing conflicts
• Peer socialisation

Course unit 2.3: Sexuality and Cohabitation

• The Gender dimension
• Sexuality and health in a cultural perspective
• Medical perspective
  - Sexually transmitted infections
  - Pharmacology
  - Contraception counselling
  - Pregnancy
• Right of referral

Assessment Methods

Children/adolescents’ development
Written group assignment with an oral presentation of a topic selected by the students related to the development of children and adolescents.

Written assignment, 5000 words; oral presentation, 30 minutes.

Counselling of parents

Practice in the counselling of parents using a DVD recording and a reflection paper. The student will be given feedback and supervision regarding the recording in groups; 10 minute recording.

Counselling on cohabitation and sexuality

Individual requirements regarding counselling in cohabitation matters, sexuality and contraception including an analysis and reflection paper; 1500 words.

Examination – children and adolescents’ health
Individual home examination, 14 days in major course unit 2, 6000 words.
