As a strategic research initiative, CMC gathers together research projects and networks of researchers at the University of Oslo that study developmental processes related to information and communication technology (ICT). The overall aim of CMC is to create arenas for the exchange of ideas and stimulating collaborations across disciplines thereby contributing to knowledge about how such processes may be supported and furthered. CMC centres on cultural, political, judicial, economic and communicative aspects of the development and use of ICT. Our broad focus reflects the premise that technological development must be understood and studied in relation to social change.
Competence and Media Convergence (CMC) is a strategic research initiative at the University of Oslo (2003-2007). CMC is a cross-disciplinary group with participants from five University faculties: Arts, Law, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Education, and Social Sciences. The interdisiplinary research centre InterMedia is coordinating the CMC activities. CMC has two main research tracks, Competence and Convergence.
CMC Competence
New types of competence develop in a complex and highly differentiated society. In brief, there is an increasing degree of specialisation taking place that demands systems for integrating different types of competencies. It is possible to distinguish between vertical and horizontal developments in relation to competence, with the vertical indicating specialization and the horizontal focused on integration and breadth. Solving complex problems in society demands both specialization and integration. In health services, the treatment of chronically ill patients may serve as an example, as specialists are needed for diagnosis and treatment while various personnel from different institutions are responsible for following up. As actors in society, we participate in many different contexts, moving between various arenas in everyday life, institutions and networks involving work and learning processes. A central characteristic of developments in contemporary society is thus the challenge to borders between everyday life and institutional arenas.
CMC Convergence
The concept convergence refers to technology-related change and shifting boundaries between telecommunication, information systems, and media technologies. It reflects how previously distinct sectors have become integrated; networks are no longer technology specific, and there is steady change in services and content. However, convergence is not a straightforward process. Instead, convergence occurs in parallel with divergent tendencies in specialised services, terminals and markets.
New Media Network
CMC has a membership in the New Media Network, look for contacts and network activities at their website: New Media Network
