Electric Power Technology - Research

Within the Electric Power Technology Group there is ongoing research and development of new technology and expertise in several fields:

In analysis, research is being conducted in modelling and calculations of over-voltages, both in the low voltage grid and internal in high voltage components, such as transformers.

Induced lightning over voltages in the low voltage grid each year causes great damage as well as economic losses due to fire, destruction of equipment and power outages. Demands for better over-voltage protection and higher standards of voltage quality, increases with the greater utilization of the power grid and the increased use of sensitive electronic equipment.

The main activity of the group is components. With close working links with industry, research into better insulation materials, both for ac and dc, is being conducted. In particular, the investigation of new insulation materials for cables is an important area. Studies on the influence of snow, ice and industry pollution on power lines are being held. Other aspects such as life-cycle costs have been receiving more increasingly more attention.

Maintenance is another future-oriented main theme. Research includes developing methods for condition based maintenance and identifying better economical utilization of electrical power components. To achieve this, new and advanced methods for monitoring the actual condition of electrical power components must be taken into use. Knowledge of ageing phenomena and use of modern computer technology is needed to realize condition based maintenance.
