Users of buildings have more and more demands for functionality. Whereas it previously was the building itself that was the major investment, the technical installations in the buildings take a bigger share of the budget.

Good planning of the technical installations is thus important, both for functionality and costs. They must also naturally be made safe.

Electrical installations in buildings are covered by the Norwegian law “Tilsynsloven”, with accompanying regulations. Up to 1991 the regulations were based on rules, and there were limited opportunities for alternative solutions. From 1991 however, the regulations have been based on functional goals, and as long as one keeps within certain limits, several solutions might be accepted, if it can be documented that the installations are within safety requirements.

It has also the last years been developed new technical solutions, both on components and on systems. Especially within control and monitoring systems, there has been more like a revolution.

Because of this, good planning requires considerable more knowledge than previously.

The course “Electrical installations” shall give the students knowledge about planning of electrical installations that fulfil the user’s needs, and also being safe. It covers paramount system solutions, and election and dimensioning of components.

In the laboratory exercises, the students have opportunity to test and verify various kinds of components, protection equipment and control systems.

In occupational relation, the course will be useful for those who are going to plan and operate electrical installations (consultants, electrical contractors, utilities), building management, and for manufacturers and suppliers of electrical installation equipment.

For those who think of a career within consulting, these courses can be natural to combine:

  • TEP4235 Energy Management in Buildings
  • TET4165 Light and Lighting
