Research at The Department of Art and Media Studies
The Department of Art and Media Studies sustains theoretical, empirical and practical research within the areas of Media Studies, Film Studies, Art History and Drama and Theatre Studies. The historical emphasis is on the 20th century, where modernist and postmodernist research questions are in focus. The Department has an Art and Cultural Studies profile that encompasses cultural expression in a broad sense with emphasis ranging from the visual expression of unique works of art to mass media and advertising. In the field of Film Studies, our researchers are studying extensively Norwegian film history and identity construction in connection with the medium, within Visual Studies: research on photography, image theory and visual culture. Art History research focuses on the architecture and art of both the medieval and modernist periods. Drama/theatre research focuses on drama pedagogy, non-European theatre forms and Norwegian theatre history.
Current research covers everything from contemporary documentary practice to Norwegian housewife films from the 1950’s, violence in newer American cinema, the city as visual space, convict photography, early Christian iconography, body and gender in film and art, Tanzanian theatre, and more. See the individual scholar’s websites for more detailed information.
