Perhaps the greatest challenge today is to elevate billions of people from poverty and give them the opportunities available in today's developed countries. However, placing too much pressure on the global climatic system may lead to severe negative consequences. My objective is to study these opposing forces and develop policies that encourage economic development whilst reducing current environmental impacts.

Most of my research has focused on the environmental impacts of Norwegian economic activity, household consumption, and climate policy. Current research is focused on Chinese environmental impacts and the impacts of international trade on the environment. For a more detailed description of previous and current research please see my Research Agenda (pdf).

I have undergraduate degrees in mathematics and physics. My PhD was in Environmental Engineering and investigated the transport of contaminants through clay liners below municipal landfills. I am from Port Stephens, which is about 150km north of Sydney, Australia.
