At the moment, on-site marine eco-toxic impacts is the main focus of environmental assessments of offshore drilling operations and drilling waste programs in Norway. The most recent result of this focus is the introduction of the "no-discharges rule", which in effect prohibits all offshore discharges in Norwegian seas. Although protection of marine resources is an important in drilling operations, any such absolute measure clearly opens up possibilities for problem-shifting and sub-optimization situations; - which it is important that environmental assessment program keep a broad and holistic perspective in order to avoid.
Life-cycle assessment (LCA) offers a framework that is holistic in its perspective, and has a well developed impact assessment methodology. Given that industrial activities most often are on-shore, some of the impacts of offshore activities cannot be properly handled with the existing life-cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods. At the time I am working with intermittent offshore eco-toxic discharges, and seeing how these can be integrated in LCIA.
My thesis is titled "Multi-criteria assessment of drilling fluids and drilling waste".
