Energy metabolism in the brain and effects of pharmacological agents

The projects are designed to look at cerebral metabolism by carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

We have several types of projects:

Cell culture: Brain cells will be grown in culture and will then be exposed to different conditions such as different pharmacological agents such as barbiturates. The experiments will be performed in the presence of 13C labeled substrates, such as glucose, acetate or glutamate and the distribution of the label in the resulting amino acids, GABA, glutamate and aspartate will be analyzed.

Animal models: Rodents are used as animal models of human disease; we specialize in epilepsy and schizophrenia. For project design see below.

Our research is mostly carried out at the MR Center in Trondheim which has 'state of the art' instrumentation which range from magnets for clinical MR research on patients and animal model studies, to high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMRS) equipment for intact tissue (HR MAS) and bio-molecules. The center is a “Marie Curie Training site (EU)” and is also the Norwegian National Center for MR spectroscopy. The facility is closely linked to the University Hospital. Furthermore, HPLC and GC/MS instruments are present in our lab.
