DMSE covers a wide range of fields within physical and process metallurgy with focus on light metals and silicon including solargrade silicon, corrosion, electrochemical energy technology, inorganic materials, ceramics and nano-structured materials. About 15 PhD candidates graduate from DMSE annually.

DMSE has several MSc programmes where up to 60 candidates graduate annually. The programmes comprise MSc degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Chemistry and Energy Technology and there is an international MSc programme in Light Metals Production.
