If you complete the application correctly, and attach sufficient documentation, your application will be processed before the start of the semester.

Easier for students to get work permit
Foreign students who are granted a residence permit to study in Norway are now automatically granted a work permit. With this permit you may work part-time beside your studies (up to 20 hours per week) and full-time during summer and Christmas holidays. You need to renew you work permit with the residence permit. To be granted a work permit, the education provider must recommend that part time work permit can be combined with your studies.
Co-operation with education providers
In order to facilitate the case processing of applications for residence permits for students, the UDI is co-operating with many education providers. The education providers will ensure that the UDI will receive documentation of enrolment with first time applications, and a statement on the study progressions that recommends the granting of a part time work permit when applying for a renewal.
This year the UDI guarantees that cases that have been sufficiently informed will be processed by August 1.
Last year approximately 8 000 foreign students were granted a permit to study in Norway. This number has doubled since 2001/2002. Most of the foreign students are from Germany, China, Russia, France and Spain.
Welcome to Norway as a student!
