The research programme assesses different aspects of cancer related to hormonal therapy and chemotherapy, as well as cancer risk factors. The research, in general, can be characterized as translational, meaning that clinical cancer research contributes to laboratory research and vice versa.

Important issues addressed:

• Somatic mutations causing cancer cells to be resistant to treatment.

• Germline factors influencing the risk of cancer affecting clinical progression of cancers and side effects during treatment.

• Hormones and their role in cancer development and treatment of various hormone-sensitive cancers.

• Tumour heterogeneity.

The work is mainly focused on cancers arising in the breast, but also includes cancers of the ovaries, prostate and the gastrointestinal tract as well as malignant melanomas.

The aim is to reveal the mechanisms regulating the behaviour of individual cancers, as well as mechanisms of cancer development and therapy resistance. A deeper understanding of cancer cell biology will result in better identification of risk factors and more optimal treatment of patients.
